The Tube: These putting tips saved me at least 2 shots today!

by Dean Dyer on January 10, 2010

I‘ve been struggling with my short game for awhile, well ever since I started playing golf if I’m honest! As an average golfer who doesn’t hit too many greens in regulation, I really should devote more time to practicing my short game.

So…….before this morning’s round I watched this putting video from Shawn Clement, a top teaching professional in the US. I took a few of his tips to the putting green before my round, and low and behold no 3 putts today……and even a few 1 putts!

There’s quite a few tips offered in this video, but the 2 key ones for me were:

  1. keeping my arms and putter hanging below my shoulders (bringing me closer to the ball)
  2. using a reference point (eg inside right foot, outside right foot) for my backswing to judge short, medium and long putts. Most of my 3 putts are a result of misjudging the distance on my first putt, so I found this tip really helpful

Time will tell whether I can sustain this improvement, but I’m pretty excited about eliminating (or at least reducing) those wasteful 3 putts. Take a look and see what you think.
